The Embol-STATION

Monitoring Software > Off-Line Emboli Classification Software: Embol-STATION

ABMI's challenge is to provide the transcranial Doppler (TCD) community with a reliable neuromonitoring system for brain emboli detection and solid/gas differentiation. The aim is to protect patients exposed to neurological decline, disability or death as a result of stroke caused by spontaneous and/or peri-operative embolization.

The ABMI product line incorporates many competitive advantages, including enhanced emboli counting, solid/gas differentiation, signal restoration and emboli visualization technologies. The next significant step will be the developement of emboli size categorisation, providing ABMI with a clear, competitive edge in neuromonitoring market place.

The Embol- STATION®1.2

The Embol-STATION® is an expert system that detects, counts and identifies brain emboli (as solid or gaseous), based on advanced signal processing. The latter is performed on the raw Doppler signal for middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow.

The Embol-STATION® performs remote, off-line analysis and provides caregivers with precisely compiled information and statistics on embolization rates and emboli types— solid particles or gas bubbles.

The Embol-STATION® software runs on off-the-shelf PCs or laptops.

Graphic displays

Three graphics displays are available :

1. A file selection display (shown) where the user selects data files for analysis and sets analysis features.

2. An analysis display (shown) which contains:

  • the FFT window (upper left) that displays blood flow,
  • the EED® window (left), providing enhanced visualization of embolic events,
  • the raw Doppler signal (lower left) for both the distal and proximal depths. On the raw Doppler windows artefacts are detected, and embolic events appear in blue (see below). To differentiate the latter, solid events are marked by "S", while gaseous events are marked by "G",
  • a command and settings window (upper right) that displays patient info, data file characteristics (e.g. PRF), status of the analysis, etc,
  • a statistics window that shows countings of solid emboli, gaseous emboli, artifacts, and total number of embolic events, separately for both the left and right MCAs.

The Embol-STATION® analysis display is here pictured during TCD data analysis, showing one event identified as solid.

3. A set of details windows (shown below) that can be used to review signals after analysis, allowing the clinician to double-check the automatic classification of HITS, to listen to the Doppler sound, and to modify, if necessary, the automatic classification of MES into artifacts, gaseous, or solid. For each HITS (artefacts and MES), a distinct details window shows the raw Doppler signals, the power spectra, detailed FFTs and CWTs for both depth gates.

Report generation

A report file is automatically generated after each analysis. The report lists all the embolic events with their classification and contains the values of some relevant parameters (e.g. frequency, power), and can easily be printed.
